Top Comment: I think of it like this. A lot of people want grounded. A lot want fantastical. 2 very different Batmen would rock that. I want both so it’s double the Batman for me

SAM-E for depression

Main Post:

My partner is wanting to try SAM-E for depression and we have noticed that it’s quite an expensive supplement. We’ve heard good things though so we thought we would ask whether anyone has found a difference in efficacy between different brands or if there’s anything we need to look out for with different brands? TIA!

Top Comment: I love SamE and will gladly spend the $45/mo on it. I’m not depressed so i wouldn’t be able to tell you what the dosage is for that, but I take one 400mg pill every morning and it improves my mood drastically.

Can SAMe really be THIS effective?

Main Post:

I'm 46f with ADHD, slow COMT, and MTHFR mutation. I've been struggling lately with low mood, fatigue, brain fog, sore joints, ADHD symptoms worsening and adderall not working, and insomnia. I assumed I was in perimenopause and wanted the hormone replacement therapy but my Dr suggested I try SAMe and a methylated vitamin first. I've been tested for everything else these symptoms could possibly be. I have tried every single supplement you can think of with no results and have no faith in supplements. So I'm super skeptical of SAMe but I've been on it for about a month now, 400mg 2x a day and my symptoms are almost gone?? It's the best I've felt in years. Could it really be the SAMe???? Anyone else have such great success with it? I want to know if it's even possible as I've been on the Hormone Replacement Therapy train for so long with no luck (Dr. wont prescribe it), it would be nice if I could have some hope that something else could be helping and I could give the HRT obsession a rest for a bit. Thanks for any input!

Top Comment: I’d read the book dirty genes if you haven’t already!

Any Success with Sam-E for Anti-Depressant?

Main Post:

I'm taking 400mg of Sam-E for mood and have for a few years now. I've thought about getting off it due to cost and so forth but am wary if it can trigger a possible depression. Has anyone had experience with Sam-E or any studies that support it's impact one way or another?

Top Comment: I have tried SAM-e, but couldn't keep it up due ro digestive issues (which I guess you aren't having). However, my barebones depression stack is: Vitamins B6, B12, and Folate (all active forms): Precursor to SAM-e, which is a precursor to serotonin. Vitamin C and Turmeric/Curcumin: The active b vitamins are a little stimulating. These are for support. In addition, inflammation has been associated with depression, so the turmeric is to support that. Magnesium: Because its a good idea for mental health and general health. The active B vitamins are kind of spendy also, but they might be cheaper, and you could still keep the benefit. I have tried stopping my stack in the past, and the depression has come back. At least with my above stack, the cure was as easy as starting them back up again (unlike with actual ssri's where I had to start finding a new one, with new side effects). Edit: added last paragraph.

Is SAM-E still believed to work?

Main Post:

I remember SAM-E was big in the 90's. It was thought to be a miracle supplement for pretty much everything and seemed pretty expensive back then. I don't hear about it much any more. Does anyone here take it? Does it get broken down in stomach? What's the best form to take? I'm thinking of trying to help my mind with it. My grandma had Alzheimer's and I'd like to prevent it or at least slow it down.

SAME-e helping me

Main Post:

I have severe histamine intolerance, which shows up mostly when my estrogen levels increase throughout my cycle. Aside from physical symptoms, like tingling, ears ringing, & flushing, it brings a ton of anxiety and depression

I recently stopped taking every single supplement, except for SAM-e, and I’m feeling better than I ever have. I’m less inflamed and happier.

100mg SAM-e is my sweet spot, more than that and I’m too alert at bed time.

I think it’s reducing a lot of my histamine related, anxiety and depression.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Edit: it’s supposed to be SAM-e in the title

Top Comment: I recently started it, and I feel it’s giving me energy back. Before I felt like every cell in my body was tired frequently. The first week on it I felt so happy and energized. Now (maybe a month out) I think it’s not doing as much but still some. I’m taking 200 mg in the morning.
